Early PPE, like body armour, boots, and gloves focused on protecting the body of the wearer from physical injury. The plague doctors of 16th-century Europe also wore protective uniforms consisting of a full-length gown, helmet, glass eye coverings, gloves and boots (“Plague doctor’s costume”) to prevent contagion when dealing with plague victims.
