Many books on scuba diving have been published over the course of time, almost since the beginning of the scuba era. The Scuba News Canada will post these “nostalgia” books considered a “blast from the past” on a regular basis, and we want you, our readers, to make suggestions of “older nostalgia diving books” you have enjoyed, or believe our readers will. The Deep, published in 2007, is indeed a “mammoth” book with 442 pages of stories, followed by an appendix, “The History of Diving” from the U.S. Navy Diving Manual. Being a collection of excerpts from other books, it does not have to be read back to front. This book is an eclectic and diverse assembling of actual experiences of people exploring and working in the underwater realm that covers over 70% of the planet.
From Jacques Cousteau”s recounting of the first dive unencumbered by air hoses, “No children ever opened a Christmas present with more excitement than we did when we unpacked the first “aqualung”. If it worked diving could it be revolutionized?”
This book covers a lot of bases, with tales of Submarine warfare in
WWII, “Wolf Pack”, “The Bull of Scapa Flow” to surface supplied air diving
“The Kingdom of the Helmet” as well as a descent in a MIR submarine in 1994 to 4,828 metres, in search of a Japanese Imperial Navy (WWII) sub loaded with gold. “Three Miles Down”. Due to the different authors of the many stories, some tales are better told than others, but never the less this book would be a very good addition to any diver’s library and can be a good source of reference.
