The United Nations (UN), its members, and ocean-related organizations throughout the world are preparing for World Oceans Day on June 8, which is a UN-designated day for commemorating the role of the oceans in our daily lives and encouraging action to protect the oceans and use marine resources responsibly.

The theme for this year’s World Oceans Day is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods,” which aims to highlight the majesty of the ocean and how it supports both mankind and all other living things on the planet. Every year on June 8, World Oceans Day is commemorated to promote awareness of the crucial importance of our oceans and their role in sustaining a healthy planet. It is intended to bring people and organizations from all around the world together in a series of events highlighting ocean protection and conservation.

World Oceans Day was first proposed by the Canadian government at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008.

Since then, the number of countries and organizations commemorating World Oceans Day has expanded each year, demonstrating the global importance of oceans.

Following World Environment Day on June 5, World Oceans Day on June 8 kicks off World Oceans Week, which includes a number of international events.
