Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

This yearly event recalls the drowning of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975, with the loss of 29 crew members. It’s also a time to remember all those who perished in Great Lakes shipwrecks.

The tourist center, fog signal building, and lighthouse will all be open. Visitors will be greeted by costumed interpreters who will present historical site and shipwreck information. In the visitor center, tourists can see a film about the Edmund Fitzgerald throughout the afternoon.

The lighthouse will close for a short time at 4:30 p.m. while the names of the crew members are read out loud to the sound of a ship’s bell. The beacon will be lit after the ceremony, and the tower will be open for tours once more.

Because the grounds and trails are not lit, bring a flashlight or headlamp. Because the weather can be fickle, please dress appropriately.
